Truesdale Detention Center Overview

The Alexandria Sheriff's Office Detention Center Bureau operates William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center as the City of Alexandria's primary adult detention center. Official local sources also call it the Alexandria Adult Detention Center or the Adult Detention Center. It functions as the city jail equivalent for Alexandria, which is not part of a county government. People held there include those committed by Alexandria courts to Sheriff custody, local pretrial detainees, locally sentenced inmates, state-responsible prisoners housed locally or awaiting transfer, and federal detainees held under the U.S. Marshals Service contract.

The facility is a direct-supervision jail. ASO describes that model as one where deputies work directly in larger housing units so staff can manage the living environment, reduce tension, and respond fast when a problem develops. The detention bureau includes security divisions, support services, classification, records management, inmate services, facility projects, K9 services, and special management functions. The Public Safety Center complex also places the jail near court and law-enforcement functions, which matters in Alexandria because the nearby federal courthouse makes federal pretrial housing a major local custody issue.

Operational records also show that the jail books inmates, houses females, uses contract medical service, and uses contract food service. Alexandria's facility population is best read through two official sources. The ASO detention page reports a 2024 daily average of 287 inmates. The Virginia FY 2024 Jail Cost Report gives the state reporting figures: 340 DOC rated operating capacity, 294 total LIDS average daily population, 148 fed/out-of-state average daily population, and 86 percent capacity use. Those figures show a jail operating below its rated capacity in the most recent official reports, while also showing that federal and out-of-state custody made up a large share of the count.

The state report also lists 150 federal contract beds. That is not a side note for William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center. It is central to how Alexandria custody works. ASO says federal housing helps process defendants through the nearby U.S. Federal Courthouse, and the local budget material says the federal government pays the city a per diem for federal inmates. For a family member, that means a person may be physically held in the Alexandria jail even when the criminal case is federal, not local.

2. If the person does not appear, call ASO Records & Inmate Information and ask whether the person is held at William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center.
3. Ask for the custody facts ASO says can be provided by phone, including charge, bond, and court date when available.
4. If the person has been sentenced to state prison, use the Virginia Department of Corrections locator instead of the local jail path.

The visitor, legal mail, and facility destination is William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center at 2001 Mill Road. The Alexandria Sheriff's Office administrative and records address is next door at 2003 Mill Road. Families often need both addresses because personal mail, legal mail, money-order mail, property questions, visitation scheduling, and public-record questions do not all use the same route.

Visitors driving to the Public Safety Center should follow Mill Road signs carefully. ASO attorney-visit instructions tell drivers to stay to the right on Mill Road when approaching the Detention Center, and the research notes visitor parking under the interstate ramp. Published jail sources did not list parking rates or time limits, so anyone who needs a precise parking rule should call before arriving.

Truesdale Video Visitation

Social visits at William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center are secure video visits through SmartInmate and Smart Communications, not traditional contact social visits. Family and friends must register and be approved by ASO before scheduling. Inmates receive two free 20-minute video visits each week. A remote visitor may connect from any location with internet access, and a visitor may also use a terminal in the Detention Center lobby at the Public Safety Center for a scheduled free video visit.

Visits are available every day, including holidays, from 7 a.m. to midnight Eastern time. They must be scheduled at least the day before and no more than seven days in advance. ASO states that family and friend video visits are monitored and recorded, and the jail may end a visit early for emergencies or operational priorities. Vendor account or technical problems go to SmartInmate support, not ASO staff.

Attorney and professional visits follow a separate rule set. ASO lists professional visit windows daily from 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Attorneys enter through the visitation center, need a current Bar Association card and photo ID, and may need approval for laptops, interpreters, or investigators.

Truesdale Mail and Deposits

Personal mail for William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center does not go to the jail. ASO uses Smart Communications and MailGuard for personal mail. The envelope must show Smart Communications/Alexandria Detention Center, the inmate name and inmate number, and the Seminole, Florida post office box. ASO says personal mail sent to the Adult Detention Center is returned to sender. Legal mail is different and still goes directly to the jail at the Mill Road address.

Deposits through Access Corrections can be made online or by phone at 866.345.1884 for a fee. Mail deposits must be money orders or cashier's checks payable to the inmate and sent to ASO Inmate Accounts at 2003 Mill Road. In-person drop-off uses the money order or cashier's check drop box inside the Visitor Center at the detention center. ASO states that funds are not refunded after they are submitted.

Truesdale Booking and Custody

Booking at William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center begins when a person is committed to Sheriff custody after an Alexandria arrest, court order, sentence, or hold. Jail staff create or update the booking record, classify the person for housing, and manage medical, mental-health, security, and records needs. The booking or inmate ID number matters later because Smart Communications requires the inmate name and inmate number on personal mail.

Custody can shift after booking. A local pretrial detainee may stay in the Alexandria jail while bond, hearings, and court dates move forward. A person sentenced to state prison may start locally and then move into the VADOC system after transfer or designation. A federal pretrial defendant may be held at the jail under U.S. Marshals Service authority, while a sentenced federal inmate usually becomes a BOP locator search. That is why a failed VINELink search does not prove the person is not in custody.

About Truesdale Detention Center

The current Adult Detention Center opened in 1987 and was later named for Deputy William G. Truesdale. Official local history says Truesdale served in the Navy during the Korean War, worked as a shore patrolman, later worked for Fairmount Heights Police Department and Lorton prison, and became an Alexandria deputy in 1973. That local naming history helps distinguish the facility from generic county jail pages.

ASO publishes more program detail than many local jails. Its inmate services material describes sobriety, education, and transition programming, including GED preparation, ESL, food service and construction-related certifications, life-skills programming, LEAD for women, law library access, Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, Sober Living Units, and reentry resource fairs. During Second Chance Month in 2025, ASO reported a reentry resource fair, an expungement clinic with justice-community partners, and rededication of the program housing unit as the Second Chance Unit.

Accreditation is also part of the facility record. ASO says the Adult Detention Center has held American Correctional Association accreditation since 1989 and National Commission on Correctional Health Care accreditation since 1991. The ASO inmate resources page also notes PREA compliance certification. No current official source reviewed showed an active overcrowding order, consent decree, jail closure plan, or replacement-construction plan for the facility.
